Sharib Hashmi on emerging as the new digital sensation: OTT revived my career

- Vijayalakshmi Narayanan

A week after the second season of 'The Family Man' landed on Amazon Prime Video, netizens have been heaping praises upon actor Sharib Hashmi, now popularly hailed as his character JK from the show for his spectacular act. Fans have been handpicking scenes and moments of the actor from the show and turning them into appreciations posts and memes.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the digital space in India has led to the discoverability and outreach of actors who were relegated to smaller roles in mainstream movies. Hashmi has had an eventful year on digital with resounding success following 'The Family Man' franchise, 'Asur' on Voot and 'Scam 1992' on Sony LIV.

When asked about how going digital has helped in boosting his career prospects, the actor quips, 'I owe my career to OTT. Rather, I'd say that OTT revived my career. Because despite the release of 'Filmistaan' I did not receive enough work. Whether it was destiny or not, I had signed some very interesting subjects which never took off or were left incomplete or unreleased. I did two independent films in between but they went unnoticed. But thankfully, 'The Family Man' changed that. People noticed and said that 'he is the same guy from 'Filmistaan'. Infact, many people haven't seen 'Filmistaan' yet and they believe that 'The Family Man' is my first project. But I'm thankful that many watched 'Filmistaan' after watching 'The Family Man' and gave that film it's due respect. Because everything I am is because of 'Filmistaan'. My career is what it is because of these two projects. I suppose the 'F' alphabet is lucky for me. Then once 'Asur' and 'Scam 1992' happened, a lot of my films such as 'Darbaan' and 'My Client's Wife' which were stuck, were released.'

Recently, IMDB included 'Scam 1992' as the only Indian show amongst its list of Most Popular Shows Of All Time. Hashmi barely had a few scenes in the show yet he played a crucial role in taking the story forward. Probe him on why did he accept to be a part of the show despite a minimal role and the actor responds, 'I just had one scene in 'Scam 1992' and yet it had such a huge impact. I only thank God, Hansal Mehta and Jai Mehta. When Jai approached me for the role, he was sceptical if I would agree or not. But I instantly agreed on the first narration itself. Had Hansal asked me to just stand in a scene, I would've agreed similarly. Because I'm a huge fan of him and his work.'

'The Family Man' Season 2 is streaming on Amazon Prime Video and it also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Priya Mani, Samantha Akkineni and others.
