With many Bollywood movies making their way to Oscars every year, regional cinema is highly ignored. There are some amazing stories that have redefined regional movies. However, with cinema, even the Oscars jury are evolving. This year is the year of regional cinemas as Gujarati movie Chello Show (Last Film Show) has been nominated for Oscars. While everyone was convinved either RRR or The Kashmir Files will make their way to the Academy Awards, the Film Federation picked Chellow Show instead.
Let`s tell you something about the Gujarati movie. Announced on Tuesday, the film stars Bhavin Rabari, Vikas Bata, Richa Meena, Bhavesh Shrimali, Dipen Raval and Rahul Koli. Chello Show revolves around the transition in India from cinema to digital where several single-screen cinemas stand to disappear. The movie had its world premier in Tribeca Film Festival in 2021. It also bagged the Golden Spike at the 66th Valladolid International Film Festival in 2021.
Director Pan Nalin says, "I could have never imagined such a day would come and bring light and celebration of light. Chhello Show has been enjoying love from around the world but there was an ache in my heart that how do I make India discover it? Now I can breathe again and believe in cinema that entertains, inspires and enlightens! Thank you FFI, Thank you Jury."
Chello Show was produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur. Being extremely overwhelmed, he said, “We are thrilled and honoured that our film, Last Film Show has been selected to represent India at the Academy Awards. There could not be a more apt time for a film like this one, that celebrates the magic and wonder of cinema and the theatrical experience. When cinema-going around the world has been disrupted by a pandemic, it reminds audiences anew of the first time they fell in love with the experience of watching a movie in a darkened cinema hall. It is a matter of great pride for us to represent our country with this film, and with the backing of our partners Samuel Goldwyn Films and Orange Studio, we will make sure that we give it our best shot at the Academy Awards!”
Having encapsulated the audience`s attention, Chello Show has truly broken the stereotype of typical Gujarati cinema with a message that`s awakening yet controversial. The committee that represents Indian cinema at Oscars 2022, headed by Kannada director TS Nagabharana, got together in Chennai a few days ago. If reports were to be believed, SS Rajamouli`s RRR and Vivek Agnihitri`s The Kashmir Files, Sajimon Prabhakar’s Malayankunju and Rahul Sankrityan’s Shyam Singha Roy were the contestors for Oscars nominations too.
So far, Indian movies that have made their way to become the top five movies in Best International Feature category are Mother India (1958), Salaam Bombay (1989) and Lagaan (2001).
Gujarati movie Chello Show will officially release in Gujarat and several other selected screens across India on October 14. The movie is helmed by Pan Nalin and banked by Roy Kapur Films, Jugaad Motion Pictures, Monsoon Films, Chhello Show LLP, and Marc Duale.
