Kamal Haasan Renounces the Title “Ulaganayagan” in an Official Statement

Tamil cinema has always celebrated its stars with affectionate titles. For over two decades, Kamal Haasan, one of the most acclaimed actors in Indian cinema, has been lovingly called “Ulaganayagan,” meaning “Universal Hero.” This title, signifying his versatility and global appeal, has been widely used by fans and the media. However, in a surprising move, Kamal Haasan recently released a heartfelt statement on social media, urging everyone to stop using the title. His message resonated with humility, emphasising his devotion to art above any individual accolades.
“I have always felt a deep sense of gratitude over being bestowed with endearing titles such as Ulaganayagan, among others. Such accolades given by the people and recognised by esteemed colleagues and admirers have always been humbling, and I’ve been genuinely moved by your love in conferring it upon me. It is my humble belief that the artist must not be elevated above the art. I prefer to remain grounded, constantly aware of my imperfections and my duty to improve. Hence, after considerable reflection, I feel compelled to respectfully decline all such titles or prefixes,” wrote Kamal, adding, “I humbly request that all my fans, the media, members of the film fraternity, party cadre, and fellow Indians, to here on after, refer to me simply as Kamal Haasan or Kamal or KH.”

Kamal Haasan went on to discuss his dedication to the art of cinema, expressing his view that the medium “transcends beyond any one individual.” He added, “The art of cinema transcends beyond any one individual, and I am but a student of the craft, forever hoping to evolve, learn, and grow. Cinema, like any other form of creative expression, belongs to all. It is the collaboration of countless artists, technicians, and audiences who make it what it is-a true reflection of humanity`s diverse, rich, and ever-evolving stories.”
By renouncing the title, Haasan hopes to emphasise that his work is a collaborative process, shared with all who contribute to cinema.

Kamal Haasan’s next major film, Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, is set to release on June 5, 2025. A period gangster drama, Thug Life marks the reunion of Haasan and Ratnam after 35 years, since their last collaboration on the iconic Nayakan in 1987.

In an official note shared in both English and Tamil, Kamal Haasan requested his fans, media, and industry colleagues to address him simply by his name.
