Kangana Ranaut and Javed Akhtar
After nearly five years of legal disputes, actress Kangana Ranaut and veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar have officially resolved their long-standing defamation case. On Friday, February 28, 2025, both appeared before a special court and informed the judge of their decision to withdraw all complaints. The resolution was later announced on social media, where Kangana shared a picture with Akhtar, confirming their reconciliation.
She wrote, “Today Javed ji and I have resolved our legal matter (defamation case) through mediation; in the mediation, Javed ji has been very kind and gracious; he also agreed to write songs for my next directorial.” The court is expected to pass a formal order on the matter later in the day.
The dispute began in 2020 when Javed Akhtar filed a defamation complaint against Kangana Ranaut. He alleged that she had made defamatory remarks about him on national and international television. His complaint was based on an interview Kangana had given after the tragic death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
In response, Kangana filed a cross-complaint, accusing Akhtar of criminal intimidation and insulting her modesty. The case continued for years, with both parties standing firm on their claims.

Akhtar, however, dismissed these claims, calling them false. He responded, “Whatever Kangana said in the interview is a lie and nothing but a lie. I had told her about the agenda of the meeting on call. Didn’t call her to discuss the weather, political situation, or American election in 2016.”
After years of heated arguments and legal proceedings, Kangana acknowledged that her statement against Akhtar stemmed from a misunderstanding. She also apologized for the inconvenience caused to him. Both parties mutually agreed to withdraw their defamation suits, bringing an end to their prolonged battle.

The Five-Year Legal Dispute: Kangana’s Allegations and Akhtar’s Response
During one of her interviews, Kangana had accused Akhtar of threatening her. She stated, “Once Javed Akhtar called me to his house and told me Rakesh Roshan (father of Hrithik Roshan) and his family are very big people. If you don’t apologise to them, you will have nowhere to go. They will put you in jail, and eventually, the only path would be that of destruction. You will commit suicide. These were his words. He shouted and yelled at me. I was shaking in his house.”Akhtar, however, dismissed these claims, calling them false. He responded, “Whatever Kangana said in the interview is a lie and nothing but a lie. I had told her about the agenda of the meeting on call.
