The Romantics Review: As The Docu-Series Celebrates Yash Chopra's Legacy, Is It Worth Your Time?

Director :

Genre : Docu-Series, Romance

Our rating :

The Romantics is a docu-series that takes us through Yash Chopra's filmography by interacting with the greatest 40 Bollywood actors including Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Rishi Kapoor, and many more. Netflix's new four-part docu-series narrates and celebrates the origins and legacy of Yash Chopra and Yash Raj Films.

Directed by Smriti Mundra and shot over three years, The Romantics is a star-studded affair mixed with playful moments. The series is a fulsome parade of some of the biggest names in Hindi cinema, who gained fame after they did a film with Yash Raj.

The Romantics Review: WhatWorked

The Romantics consists of episodes that celebrate Yash Chopra's journey of becoming a massive filmmaker, its handsome heroes, lovely heroines, romantic songs, and dance among other things. The magic created by YRF is unforgettable and is carried forward by his older son Aditya Chopra. The Romantics is a sea of nostalgia that makes us revisit the makings of blockbuster romantic films. It speaks of Yash Chopra's journey of putting Bollywood romance on the global map.

The pleasantly surprising point was when Aditya Chopra, who is known to hate doing interviews, extensively spoke about his love affair with cinema and his father's contribution to making him the filmmaker he is today.

There's also an interview with the late Rishi Kapoor whose funny commentary is among the most memorable things of the series. YRF not only beautifully molded romance but also made us believe in a world of fictional love stories and cinematic tales.

The Romantics Review: What Didn't Work

We will sum it up in just one sentence - you will have to be a die-hard Bollywood fan to binge-watch The Romantics. Of course, it revolves around Yash Chopra, his movies, and how he became the 'Father of Romance.' But after a point, it somehow fails to connect with the layman as the conversations become rather monotonous.

Glorifying Bollywood movies, their characters, the filmmaking process, the struggles, and everything in between would've been good for one or two episodes. We are not sure if a four-part docu-series would keep the viewers hooked till the end.

Another thing that created the funniest hiccup amidst this Netflix docu-series was Uday Chopra's weird accent. That was rather unnecessary because we all have heard him deliver dialogues and this is definitely not his real accent.

The Romantics Review: Our Verdict

Well, if you are a true blue Bollywood fan, you must add The Romantics to your binge-watch list. Even one episode is enough to make you nostalgic and miss the time when you fell in love with Yash Chopra's world of romance. This was our review for Netflix docu-series The Romantics. What are your views on the same?
