As India is preparing for its 78th independence day on August 15, 2024, it is time to re-look at certain chapters that made this country what it is today. While some events were highly fruitful, others come bearing traumatic memories and incidents. One of which was the India-Pakistan partition. As August 14 marks Pakistans independence day, lets take a look at five brilliant movies that were based on the Indo-Pak 1947 partition.
1. 1947 Earth: 1999
This Deepa Mehta masterpiece finds itself in every list that is about movies showcasing the brutality of the India-Pakistan partition. 1947 Earth revolves around a beautiful Hindu woman, who works as a nanny, who finds herself entagled in a love triangle with two Muslim men while also dealing with the devastating consequences of the partition.Based on Bapsi Sidhwa's novel, Cracking India, the movie features Aamir Khan, Nandita Das, and Rahul Khanna in pivotal roles.
2. Pinjar: 2003
Pinjar narrates a terrifying story of a Hindu woman being abducted by a Muslim man due to a rivalry between their families. The movie, helmed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, deals with unfathomable violence in a sensitive manner.Women were the biggest victims during the 1947 India-Pakistan partition. The film stars Urmila Matondkar, Sanjay Suri, and Manoj Bajpayee in pivotal roles.
3. Gadar Ek Prem Katha: 2001
The Sunny Deol-Ameesha Patel starrer revolves around a Sikh truck driver who falls in love with a Muslim woman at the time of the partition when communal tensions between Sikhs and Muslims were at all time high.Even though Deol's performance was massively applauded for his courage and intense action, the movie is a love story at heart. Gadar was every millennial's introduction to patriotism and partition.
4. Bombay: 1995
While this Mani Ratnam masterpiece is more inclined towards the aftermath of the Indo-Pak partition, Bombay tells the story of an interreligious couple (a Hindu man who falls in love with a Muslim woman), who elope and marry each other against their families will.They come to Bombay to live a peaceful life. However, they soon find themselves facing the wrath of communal riots. Starring Manisha Koirala and Arvind Swamy, the film depicts the gruesome 1992-93 Hindu-Muslim riots.
5. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: 2013
Though it is a sports drama based on the life of Indian athlete and Olympian Milkha Singh, the film depicts some horrors during the 1947 partition and the communal riots between Muslims and Sikhs.In one of the scenes, some Muslim men wipe off Milkha Singh's entire family, leaving just him and his elder sister to survive.
