Its been 26 years since "Mission Kashmir" arrived on the big screen, leaving the fans captivated by its intense storytelling, powerful performances and unforgettable music. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the 2000 film brought together Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Preity Zinta and Jackie Shroff in a gripping tale of revenge, loss and emotional conflict. Set against the turbulent backdrop of Kashmir, the film explored the devastating consequences of violence through deeply personal relationships. But beyond its memorable scenes and emotionally charged narrative, "Mission Kashmir" has a fascinating story of its own. From interesting casting choices to the creative decisions that shaped its cinematic identity, several lesser-known details deserve attention. As the film celebrates 26 years, lets revisit some surprising facts that might change the way you remember this Bollywood thriller!

Cops shooed Hrithik away with a stick
When shooting started in late 1999, Hrithik Roshan was completely unknown because his debut film "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai" had not yet hit theaters. Filming took place under extreme security in the valley right after the Kargil War. On the first day, Hrithik arrived on set dressed as a Kashmiri militant for his role. Because of his fair complexion, the local security guards mistook him for a real local insurgent and shooed him away from the set with a stick. A baffled Vidhu Vinod Chopra had to step in and convince the cops, "Ye hero hai!" (He is the hero!)

The climax was filmed in toxic water
The intense, 10-day climax fight sequence between Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt was filmed in a lake. Shockingly, the water was heavily contaminated with grease, rotten apples, and human waste. To protect themselves, Sanjay Dutt wore a scuba suit under his clothes, while Hrithik wrapped his legs and feet in plastic bags. The toxic water seeped in anyway, leaving Hrithik with severe skin rashes that required him to take daily antiseptic baths during production.

Hrithik Roshan was paid less than Preity Zinta
Because he signed the film as a newcomer, Hrithik’s initial contract was set at a modest 11 lakh. Preity Zinta, who was already an established star, was signed for 15 lakh—making her salary higher than the main lead's. Similarly, Sanjay Dutt signed a risky deal where he would receive 25 lakhs only if the film broke even, and an additional 25 lakhs upon profit. After "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai" became a historic blockbuster mid-shoot, Hrithik's stardom skyrocketed, the film's budget was increased, and Chopra ultimately doubled the cast and crew's payouts upon the movie's success

The real-life "Altaaf" tragically ended up in an orphanage
While the movie portrays Altaaf being adopted by a high-ranking police official, the script eerily mirrored a real-life tragedy. A young Kashmiri boy named Gazi Hassan Bhat was the lone survivor of a horrific 1998 family massacre in Doda. When the movie was released, rumors spread that the real boy had been adopted by someone in the security forces just like the film. However, the reality exploded two years later when it was discovered that the traumatized child was actually living in a Srinagar orphanage, battling severe PTSD.

SRK & Amitabh Bachchan formed the original cast
The lead roles of Altaaf (Hrithik) and Inayat Khan (Sanjay Dutt) were originally offered to Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. However, both actors turned down the project because they had already committed to Yash Chopra’s Mohabbatein. In a massive twist of fate, both Mission Kashmir and Mohabbatein clashed at the box office on the exact same Diwali weekend in 2000.
