One of the most underrated filmmakers in Bollywood, Anurag Basu has delivered stories that were probably way ahead of their times. It was the simplicity of the stories and the complexity of the characters that made these films interesting to watch.

For the unversed, some of his best works are Bollywood movies like Life In A Metro, Ludo, Barfi, and more. Apart from being an incredible filmmaker, he is known to narrate stories that tackle bold topics.

As Anurag Basu turns let's have a look at some of his phenomenal films that continue to be a benchmark of today's cinema.

1. Life In A Metro - 2007

Truly one of the most underrated movies, Life In A Metro revolves around nine characters whose lives are entangled with each other's fate as they set out to find love and success. The music, the storyline, the direction, and the acting was beyond an ordinary mainstream cinematic work.

The movie features Shilpa Shetty, Kay Kay Menon, Shiney Ahuja, Konkana Sen Sharma, Kangana Ranaut, Irrfan Khan, Sharman Joshi, and more in pivotal roles.

2. Jagga Jasoos - 2017

Though the movie was a disaster at the box office, Jagga Jasoos is one of the goofiest, most light-hearted movies. The story is about a self-proclaimed detective and an enthu-cutlet journalist who set out on an adventure to find the former's father. It is headlined by Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

3. Barfi! - 2012

Speaking of some incredible storytelling and complex characters, what can be a better example than Barfi? This Anurag Basu directorial beautifully captures happiness, pain, heartbreak, love, friendship, and every emotion in between.

What happens when a mischievous deaf man (Ranbir Kapoor) meets two women - Shruti (Ileana D'Cruz), his first love, and Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) whom he looks after and spends the rest of his life with?

Fun fact about Barfi - the filmmaker initially thought it was a mistake to cast Priyanka for the role of Jhilmil. He thought she won't be able to break her glamorous image and become an autistic girl who is quite a contradiction to the characters that the actress had previously played.

4. Murder - 2004

You can't miss this one when you think of the best Anurag Basu movies. An erotic thriller was Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat's debut movie that invited controversies and kickstarted the era of Hashmi's kisses.

5. Stories By Rabindranath Tagore - 2015

A TV series anthology directed by Basu still remains one of his finest works. He brings life to the literary works of Rabindranath Tagore. Set in the early 20th Century in West Bengal, the series is a compilation of stories likeChokher Bali, Atithi, Kabuliwala, Broken Nest, Samapti, and more.

6. Ludo: 2020

He is called the ace of anthologies for a reason, and his last film, Ludo, stands as a testament to that. The Netflix release came out during the pandemic and entertained the audience thoroughly.
