Following the massive success of Kantara in 2022, Rishab Shetty is back with the final shooting schedule of Kantara: Chapter 1 — the highly anticipated prequel to the mystical blockbuster. The filming officially began on May 7, 2025, at a location about 20 km from Kundapur, Karnataka.
Despite facing multiple setbacks, including the tragic death of junior artiste MF Kapil, the production team has forged ahead. Kapil drowned in the Kollur Souparnika River during a break, and a police investigation is currently underway. The shoot was paused temporarily following the incident.
Earlier, a bus carrying junior artistes overturned though no injuries were reported and severe weather damaged an expensive set. Additionally, the crew was scrutinized by forest authorities over alleged environmental disruptions during filming.

Yet the makers remain undeterred. Hombale Films is backing this ambitious project, which features a massive war sequence involving over 500 trained fighters and a crowd of 3,000, choreographed by national and international experts. The scale is being touted as one of the grandest in Indian cinema.
Set during the Kadamba dynasty, Kantara: Chapter 1 explores Karnataka’s ancient cultural, mythological, and architectural richness. Rishab Shetty, serving as both director and lead actor, has rigorously trained in horse riding, Kalaripayattu, and sword fighting to bring realism and intensity to his role.
In 2023, Shetty confirmed that Kantara was actually Part 2, and the upcoming Chapter 1 will dive deep into the saga’s origin story.The film is slated to hit theatres on October 2, 2025, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
