As we inch closer to 78th Independence Day 2024, it is time we celebrate the unsung heroes of India, not just today but every day. Thanks to Bollywood, we are able to learn more about them through some blockbuster movies. On Independence Day, lets have a look at five women-led patriotic movies that celebrated the bravery and sacrifices of these unsung heroes who made our country proud.
1. Alia Bhatt in Raazi
Sehmat was one of those unsung heroes who sacrificed her life in every possible way for her country without wearing a uniform. She was an Indian spy who married a Pakistani armyman, only to find out disturbing secrets the enemy was planning against our country.While she succeeded in the mission, Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) lost everything, including her husband. Raazi is based on a book titled Calling Sehmat, written by Harinder Sikka.
2. Sonam Kapoor in Neerja
Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja was a loud and clear message that you don't need to don a uniform to be a patriotic Indian. Neerja Bhanot was an air hostess who protected her passengers when a flight was hijacked by menacing terrorists.She was just 24 when she died, fulfilling her duty. Bollywood movies like these show how one woman can be a human shield and be selfless towards her country.
3. Priyanka Chopra in Mary Kom
Today, she is a renowned Olympic boxer who brought home the bronze medal for India. But back in 2014, not everyone knew about Mary Kom and her exceptional accomplishments.Priyanka Chopra played the role of Mary Kom and narrated her entire life story. From her childhood to developing a passion for boxing to the ups and downs in her personal life, the movie moved us in more ways than one.
4. Janhvi Kapoor in Gunjan Saxena
Janhvi Kapoor's portrayal in and as Gunjan Saxena was convincing enough for us to know the power of a woman who is on a mission to save her country amidst a war crisis.Gunjan Saxena, an Indian Air Force pilot, became the first woman to fly in the combat zone during the 1999 Kargil War. Her story is beyond inspirational. The movie will bring out the patriotic spirit within you.
5. Kangana Ranaut in Manikarnika
The actress, who is known for her spectacular performances, headlined Manikarnika and narrated the story of Jhansi Ki Rani. The story of the queen who fought against the Britishers to save her motherland is one that should be passed down through every generation.Kangana Ranaut played the brave and bold Manikarnika, who then popularly went on to be known as Jhansi Ki Rani.
