On January 30, the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was mercilessly killed by Nathuram Godse. After dedicating his entire life to Indias independence, Gandhiji breathed his last after being assassinated. On Mahatma Gandhis death anniversary, lets see five Indian movies that depict his assassination.
1. Nine Hours To Rama (1963)
A British-American film starring Horst Buchholz, José Ferrer, and Wendy Hiller was directed by Mark Robson. Nine Hours to Rama revolves around the real-life events of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, including the intentions and motivations of Nathuram Godse to kill him.While it was an earnest attempt to showcase Gandhiji's death, the film was not received well at the box office and was a failure.
2. Gandhi (1982)
Gandhi, released in 1982, was a British-Indian historical film based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. It narrated the real-life events of the leader who led the nonviolent resistance movement against British rule.Gandhi was directed by Richard Attenborough and written by John Briley. Ben Kingsley played the titular role in the film.
3. Hey Ram (2000)
Hey Ram is a 2000 historic period drama starring Kamal Haasan, Rani Mukerji, Naseeruddin Shah, and Atul Kulkarini in leading roles. The film revolves around the partition of 1947, where a fictional character, who isn't Nathuram Godse, is on a mission to kill Gandhi.4. The Gandhi Murder (2019)
The Gandhi Murder is an Indian-British drama film directed by Rakesh Sharma. The film is based on Gandhi's assassination in 1948 and the events leading up to it. The movie starred Ian Charleson as Mahatma Gandhi and Darshan Jariwala as Nathuram Godse.While the movie was a modern-day depiction, The Gandhi Murder was rather criticized for showcasing Godse as a patriot and Gandhi as a divisive leader.
5. Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh (2023)
A historic drama shows a fictional conversation between Gandhi and his killer, Nathuram Godse, which happens in a prison. What happens when two different political ideologies clash in 1948?Gandhi Godse stars Deepak Antani as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Chinmay Mandlekar as Godse.
