I feel lucky that Mohit decided to work with me for the third time: Shraddha Kapoor
- Team RadioCity
An unconventional soundtrack and an unusual pairing, Mohit Suri's 'Half Girlfriend' starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor promises a roller-coaster ride at the box office.Team Radio City caught up with Arjun, Shraddha and Mohit, as the film nears it release on May 19th.Arjun, what is the feeling with the rushes of the film having been received so well?Arjun: It comes from a very happy space. All of us are feeling wonderful that the trailer and the songs of the film have been well-received by the audience. We finished shooting in October and since then there was a lull, but now with promotions having begun, we are back to discussing and recalling all the wonderful memories we had on sets. So, so far, so good.Shraddha, there has been an observation that any film starring you has to include a mandatory rain song. And incidentally the song in your film is titled, 'Baarish'. Your comment?Shraddha: laughs This time we thought, why beat around the bush. Let's get to the point.Mohit, you've always proved your knack for good music with every film of yours. We see that 'Half Girlfriend' is also designed to be a musical. Which are your favorite songs from the soundtrack that you've been listening to?Mohit: So, we have a track called 'Phir Bhi Tumko Chahunga' which is the theme song of the film. This song talks about the emotion that governs the film. Whether it was 'Tum Hi Ho' in 'Aashiqui 2' or 'Woh Lamhe' in my first film, 'Zeher', I've always felt if you create one good song in a significant portion of the film, it takes the plot, way too forward. I've never pressurized my music directors to deliver me a chartbuster soundtrack. I only tell them that this is an important scene and this is what I want to emote. Help me execute it. Then there is 'Baarish', which has been done by a relatively new composer, Tanishk Bagchi. I remember I wanted a song to show that college romances happen during the rains. And rains usually occur when college begins. So I did not want to take the conventional route of showing and talking about first love. Hence, I thought of using rain as a metaphor to drive the same point.Shraddha, not that we are fishing for any, but what according to you does 'Half Girlfriend' hold similar to 'Aashiqui 2'?Shraddha: Not just 'Aashiqui 2' but also with 'Ek Villain', what stays constant is the emotional intensity. You can look at the film and say that it is a Mohit Suri film. Of course, I feel lucky that Mohit decided to work with me for the third time, because through his films, the kind of connect that his characters and actors find with the audience is unparalleled. Then the audience recall you with the character that you played. It's funny but if you google Aarohi Kapoor, my picture shows up. smilesArjun, with Mohit's films, you require a lot of intensity, which we are sure that you could bring forth to your character. Tell us about this experience?Arjun: Of course, while portraying an emotional character, you get to explore the underlying depths of pain. So, there are scenes where you'd see me drinking. Because as they say, that one addiction can kill another. You tend to overcome pains by putting yourself through one. There are instances where we do not realise the extent of our limits unless we end up doing things that are unimaginable. Madhav is like that. He loves but doesn't get the reciprocal. Hence, it's his selfless love that makes him push his own boundaries.Tell us your definition of a half-girlfriend.Arjun: I feel this is all about one-sided love. There is no physicality involved over here. There is an emotional connect between two people.Shraddha you?Shraddha: With reference to my character that I play called Riya Somani, this story is about a girl, who is good at academic and sports, dresses well and belongs to the rich and elite crust of the society. But within herself, she has her own dreams and aspirations. If you see her in the song 'Baarish', when it starts raining, she just goes and stands beneath the showers because it makes her happy. Situations in her life are such that she is scared to commit. That's when Madhav enters her life and fills a certain void in her life. But his inability to speak English and being a polar opposite of her, doesn't let love prosper the way it should. So 'Half Girlfriend' is all about knowing that love knows no language or barriers.Mohit, the music of this film is very distinctive from your previous albums. Was it a conscious effort?Mohit: Whenever I make a film, I prefer to express more through music than to have more dialogues penned and scenes filmed to communicate the same point. If you look at the music here, there is conventional music that you would usually spot in my films, but I've also tried looking for fresher voices and compositions to help communicate much more than what you must have come across in the book. So there are songs that are partially or completely written in English keeping in mind Shraddha's character who converses mostly in English. While Arjun's perspective is conveyed through the Hindi lyrics.Arjun, this is the first time that you've played an extremely intense character. Your take.Arjun: There are choices that the character makes that makes him come across as heroic. He isn't built that way. Loving is easy but receiving love is difficult. So he loves her but he knows he cannot expect the same from her. Irrespective of where their paths may lead them, he will be there for the woman he loves, whenever she needs him.Picking up the accent would've been easier, we guessArjun: It was. But I was keener to learn the body language because it was important to understand the background, the character belongs to.
