Gujarat HC Halts Release of Maharaj Starring Aamir Khan`s Son, Junaid Khan

The much-anticipated debut of Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan in the film "Maharaj" has been thrown into uncertainty after the Gujarat High Court placed a stay order on its release. The move comes in response to a plea filed by a Hindu group claiming the movie could potentially offend religious sentiments and incite violence.

Justice Sangeeta Vishen of the High Court passed an interim order on Thursday, effectively blocking the release of the film on any platform, including its scheduled premiere on Netflix. The court also issued notices to the Central Government, streaming giant Netflix, and Yash Raj Films, the production house behind "Maharaj." The next hearing in the case is scheduled for June 18, 2024.

Petitioners claim religious sentiments hurt

The stay order was issued based on a petition filed on behalf of the Pushtimarg sect of Hinduism, who are devotees of Lord Krishna. The petition argues that "Maharaj," which revolves around the historical Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, has the potential to disrupt public order and even incite violence against the sect's followers.

The petitioners take particular issue with the film's portrayal of the 1862 case, which centred on allegations of misconduct by a prominent Vaishnavite religious leader. They claim the movie depicts "seriously blasphemous comments against Lord Krishna as well as devotional songs and hymns." Additionally, the petition raises concerns about the lack of promotion for the film, suggesting a deliberate attempt to avoid scrutiny of its content.

According to the synopsis shared by Netflix, "Maharaj" is set in 1862, a period of significant social and political change in India. The film delves into the true story of Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer who championed women's rights and social justice. The synopsis describes Mulji as "a pioneering advocate for women's rights and social reform," highlighting his fight for widow remarriage and his role in challenging societal norms.

The central narrative revolves around the Maharaj Libel Case, a landmark legal battle ignited by Mulji's exposeacute on the alleged misconduct of a prominent religious figure. The case, as described by Netflix, "garnered widespread attention and scrutiny," highlighting its historical significance.
