The Unique Friendship Between Shantanu Naidu and Ratan Tata

The friendship between Naidu and Tata began in 2014 and blossomed over their mutual love for dogs. Shantanu, a fifth-generation Tata employee, started working as a design engineer at Tata Elxsi in Pune. Moved by the dangers street dogs faced, he and a friend created reflective collars to make the animals more visible at night. When funding ran low, Naidu's father suggested writing a letter to Ratan Tata. To Naidu's surprise, Tata replied two months later, inviting him to Mumbai.

Impressed by Naidu's initiative, Tata offered him a role, beginning a professional and personal relationship that would last a decade. Naidu once described Tata as a 'Millennial Dumbledore,' a man with deep wisdom and a witty sense of humour who loved surrounding himself with young people.

Ratan Tata's support extended beyond the business world. In 2022, Shantanu Naidu launched a startup called Goodfellows, aimed at addressing the loneliness experienced by the elderly. Tata, a strong advocate for the venture, once humorously commented, 'Clearly, Shantanu doesn't like the work that he's got in my office. So, he looks for dogs that need companionship. The other people that need companionship.'
